God in his wisdom has provided man with natural forks - his fingers. Therefore it is an insult to him to substitute artificial metal forks for them when eating.

  1. When sitting at the table, do not loosen your belt, do not behave as a savage.
  2. It is a rule to eat with your hands. Having washed your hands to eat, do not touch anything but food until you are finished.
  3. If you forget to wash your hands before you eat, it is a very bad sign; it can cripple your fingers.
  4. As an educated man, do not make slurping sounds while eating with the spoon. It would give an impression of lack of panache.
  5. Do not eat bread between courses; you do not want to be deemed as impatient.
  6. While eating, use some bread to nestle up the meat.
  7. Do not huff like a seal and do not snap your lips when you eat, because these are peasant's manners.
  8. Do not pick your teeth with the knife, it is unpleasant, do it with a pin.
  9. After biting the bread, do not dive it into the sauce, this is a bad habit of rude people.
  10. Do not take too much bread so that the crumbs fall here and there. You will be deemed as a glutton.
  11. Do not swallow the entire bit of food until well chewed, so you do not choke.
  12. Do not drink the chalice of wine with your mouth empty thus; the others do not think you are wine thirsty.
  13. Whenever you drink wine, lift the chalice a little, thank the host, and give thanks to God.
  14. Do not drool over while you drink, because this is a shameful way to quench thirst.
  15. Do not speak while you have something in your mouth, preventing anything going from throat to lungs, which would be fatal for you.
  16. If you see something that pleases you on a plate that is in front of another person, do not take it, lest you be considered rude.
  17. Do not spit on the table, neither in the basin. When you cannot swallow what you have in your mouth, throw it to the ground.
  18. Do not put back in the dish the meat you did not eat, it belongs to the creatures of God who are now serving you. It is also charity to distribute the remains.
  19. After the meal, wash your hands because it is hygienic and elegant: many people suffer from eye diseases by touching them without having washed their hands after meals.
  20. If anything falls to the ground while you eat, you should immediately push it away with your foot. What falls to the ground belongs to God and He will designate who will eat it.
  21. If you start sniffing, stand up discreetly, so you do not do it into the dishes. It would give the impression of a swine belonging to the class of animals.
  22. The three unseemly things are to snort like a salmon; to eat ravenous like the badger; and to eat loudly like the swine.
  23. Blowing the nose into the hat or clothing is coarse, and doing it with the arm or elbow is merchant's manners. Nor is it polite to use the towel. Clean the mucus immediately on the loose sleeve of the hand, because it is much more reproachable to blow your nose to the towel.
  24. When you finish the meal and need to clean your hands, ask for the bowl.
  25. Never, but never complain when you eat.
  26. Being seated at the table is called "Communicating with the Lord", so stop spitting, yawning, gasping, when you are at the table.
  27. Honourable and noble man does not stick his fingers in the ears or the eyes, nor, never, in the nose, when eating, as does the rabble. These habits are ugly and considered heretic.
